Snowy Owl

Bubo scandiacus

Snowy owls are known for their striking appearance: males are bright white, while females are white with a dark bar pattern. They eat a variety of small prey including voles, mice and lemmings, which they swallow whole. Unlike most owls, snowy owls hunt during the day, especially at dawn and dusk.

These owls can live and nest in the far north regions around the North Pole. They’re also found in southern Canada and the northern United States, and parts of Asia and Europe.

Snowy owls are almost completely covered in downy feathers, from their beaks all the way to their fluffy feet. This insulation keeps them warm in cold climates.
